Task 1
Task 2
Task 3
Department Introduction/Taster Sessions
As Year 2’s we were tasked with planning and running introduction/taster sessions for the first years to experience what happens in each department.
Me and Dan worked together on delivering a session on AV that included talking about Projection, AV hardware and AV software (See image for rough plan of the session)
Overall, in the actual session Dan took the lead as he is more confident and has a wider knowledge of AV however, we both contributed as much of our knowledge gained last year as we could in the time given.
One positive of the sessions was that the new first years came away with a larger understanding of what AV is and what we do, however if we were to do it again, we could be a lot more organised and refined what we showed them so it wasn’t too many different things to take in at once.
Heads Of Department Interview Preparation
This year I am applying for Production Manager/AV 2
I am applying for this roll because I feel I would be able to bring a lot to the table as i have a lot of experience as a PM for external clients and i have skills in organising, communicating, planning, helping to design, and working out logistics and safety of sets etc. I know this roll comes with a lot of pressure and 9 times out of 10 I can cope under pressure however I am well aware that sometimes I can turn into a different person and have a bit of a temper and I have been working on that and is something that I believe will be resolved with some more experience with this type of pressure.
The last event you worked on: What did you do? What challenges did you face? What would you do differently?
The last event I worked on was a dance show for an external hire company during which I was head of lighting meaning I designed programmed and operated the lighting using out Zero 88 Frog with our generics, scrollers and mini LED moving pin spots controlled from a DMX 512. One of the main challenges we faced was controlling our cold spark machines as originally, we were controlling them with their remote which wasn’t very reliable, so we managed to patch it into a mini analogue desk via DMX to make them easier to control. Overall, the show was okay however there would be a couple things I would change one of them being having a proper tech rehearsal as they didn’t have all the tracks for the rehearsal we did. Another thing I would change next time is how we had set up the extra hired equipment as we didn’t plan on using DMX with it so it resulted in us having 3 different lighting desks which next time we will try and get it into only 2 (the frog for generics and DMX 512 for LED).
How do you keep yourself up to date with industry and product development?
As the industry is constantly evolving, I use different resources such as YouTube, Google and social media to keep myself updated on what’s happening and changing etc however, I also talk to other people I know who are currently in the industry about their experiences and any new things they’ve found and where possible for them to show me what it is and how it works.
What is your greatest professional achievement to date, and why?
Personally, I can’t choose just one achievement as my greatest to date however If I could only choose one achievement it would have to be between 1) being asked to work for a live events company as Stage/Lighting Crew and 2) Designing and Programming the lighting and also being stage manager for an amateur production of Legally Blonde.
I would have to choose between these due to what I’ve learnt during both of them and because they are both the key starting points of my professional career in the industry. However, most of all they have been some of my favourite experiences especially in terms of my enjoyment.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
My goal in 5 years is to be working on a West End show/major touring production as a Stage, Lighting or AV Crew member however I am open to be working in any area of live events including corporate and expeditions as general crew.
Review of online Platforms
Linked in
this is useful for finding online contacts and industry professionals. It is also useful as it allows other people to indorse you for skills etc.
Mandy.com
This is good as it is industry specific however you can’t join until you are 18 which can be very limiting until then.
The Stage
Again, this is good as it is industry specific however after a while it makes you pay for some of their features which can make it quite expensive.

Interview feedback PDF
This is my interview feedback outlining my responses from the interview.
Overall I think I answered the questions well as the feedback highlights my industry knowledge and ability to problem solve resulting in getting the roles AV 2 and PM 2 which I am very happy with as it means I can still do my AV jobs but also assist in project management which was something I wanted to be more involved in this year.
